Seattle Rock Orchestra Presents Original Works with Local Artists

In a departure from it’s better known tribute show traditions, Seattle Rock Orchestra is teaming up with a host of local musicians to present original, small-ensemble works.

Join Seattle Rock Orchestra at Chop Suey this Thursday, November 17 as they scale down from a 50-piece orchestra to groups of four or five to explore the intimate art of chamber music.

Featuring songs from local artists like Jen Wood, Chris Cunningham of Ravenna Woods, Kaylee Cole, Kris Orlowski & the Passenger String Quartet, Benjamin Verdoes of Mt. St. Helen’s Vietnam Band and James Lanman of the Good Hurt. Get your tickets here.

Vancouver Fashion Week 2011 Pictures

This year Vancouver Fashion Week celebrated its tenth year by holding it’s fashion show in Masik Studios. Masik’s paint splattered walls gave you a sense of creativity and expression. With 55 presenting designers on the list it was hard to keep track of who was who. Names like Eva Chen, Joseph Ribkoff, Claire O’Connor, and Claire O’Connor were some to grace the runway. In case you missed it here are a few pictures of the evenings I attended. Click Vancouver Fashion Week to find out more info.

Rene Ropas Doll house prom recap with Video

It has been hard for me to put into words what just happened last week. I’m still in a kind of shock. After months of hype with high expectations, Rene Ropas: Team Unstoppable stepped up, and turned our world upside down. The NW designer scene, and quite possibly the entire city of Seattle will never be the same.
No joke.
Designer Morgan Carson’s team just did the fashion equivalent to being the 1st group to break the speed of light. Every designer, blogger, or industry person I know who was there all felt the same. The depth of the glamour that was shown is hard to fully articulate. Even the pictures don’t do it justice. Let me try….
In one of the savviest brand alliances of all time, Google Places (Or Google: Seattle if you prefer) announced they were sponsoring Rene Ropas’ next runway fashion show. We should’ve known then that this would be game-changing. This pulled the dual effect of not only highlighting how intelligent Google’s selection was, (Finding a local’s local who could hang with the luxury fashion crowds.) but also confirming what many of us already knew: that this prodigy is a leader in intelligent design.

The 1st presentation was the Infiniti ready to wear collection. The models came out with poise to music that sounded like a Tron-like sonata, and proceeded to march one after the other in a complex geometric pattern that insured every person in the 500 person crowd had a great view at the garments. The cut and texture of these pieces had the simultaneous effect of being adventurous, yet subdued in a very intricate, but feminine way. The audience was blown back by the presence, then immediately drawn in to study why….
The fall avant garde collection, Femme Au Foyer, turned it up a notch. It dazzled with it’s future-shock, and you would’ve thought Google’s technicians themselves were taking instruction from Team Unstoppable on how to design quality couture with LED. (I really hope these 2 parties collaborate again.) Rene Ropas made an unspoken point that clothing could still be innovative while also being organic.

The event wrapped up nicely with Morgan thanking the audience, and then being challenged to a dance battle. Yep. Co-sponsor Shocking Goat’s mascot “Mister Fresh” came out and flirtatiously started breakdancing. Morgan Carson did not miss a beat as she brought it back to him on the dance floor that ended with her pulling him by his tie. It broke the ice and motivated all those in attendance to join them, celebrating the fact that the NW may finally be close to crafting a new unique aesthetic that nobody else has seen anywhere else. It was an unforgettable night. It was full of joy. And it was UNSTOPPABLE.
